A Letter From Us

Dear Patron,

Life in North Texas can be hard.

Drought, floods, wildfires, tornadoes — we are all too familiar with the natural disasters and other adversity our community has faced over the years. Yet, through it all, we have held strong.

It’s been thirty years since the April 10, 1979 tornado ripped through North Texas, scarring our land and breaking our hearts.  But the community held strong, coming together and setting an example of strength and perseverance for future generations to follow.

It is in that spirit that we ask your help in commemorating this event that forever changed the lives of all who lived through it — in many ways for the better.

One of those changes was the establishment of the Leadership Wichita Falls organization, which was formed in the months following the storm.  This year, the 2009 Class of Leadership Wichita Falls will publish a book of untold stories and photos.

While, naturally, we mourn the loss of life on that day, it is the goal and intent of our project to focus more on the trials that we as a community endured and overcame. This memorial will not be a reminder of a dark past, but rather a spotlight on the human spirit and this community’s undying faith in the future, our willingness to roll up our sleeves and help our neighbors like true Texans.

We ask your help in commemorating the fortitude and sheer will of the people who refused to be defined by a disaster — and instead chose to write their own ending to the story of April 10, 1979.

A portion of your proceeds will go to area disaster response teams, to help keep future generations of North Texans stay safe and prepared.

It is the kindness and generosity of our neighbors and friends, no matter how far away, that are a testament to the faith we have in making this city a better place.
